Dissertations may seem like longer and more difficult projects than essays because they take longer to finish. (In contrast to an essay which can be written in a few days or weeks, e.g., one day at a time with multiple drafts and revisions) The length of time over which dissertation projects are created can be weeks or months. Some students find that this type of dissertation project requires more dedication than an essay, especially while they are still managing their other responsibilities of classes, work, etc., throughout that same timeframe.

Students often use pacing strategies as opposed to speed in order to keep up with their work. Examples of these strategies are chapter outlines that they create early in the process, weekly chapter goals and review of previous academic writing to see how you create connections between your arguments in the writing. Additionally, paying attention to the structure and format expectations before starting to write will help reduce confusion as you continue through the process of writing your dissertation. While looking into how dissertations are typically organized, references to resources such as dissertation writing services sometimes appear as examples of academic structure rather than as direct solutions.

Over time, working in smaller stages often makes large projects feel more manageable and less overwhelming.
