Once upon a time, a farmer discovered that one of his hens had laid a golden egg. Astonished and delighted by this miraculous find, he quickly realized that he could become rich by selling the egg. Day after day, the hen continued to lay a single golden egg, and the farmer grew rich from his sales. However, as his wealth increased, so did his impatience and greed. He couldn't stand the thought of getting only one golden egg each day. Believing that the hen must have a large store of golden eggs inside her, he decided to kill the hen and take all the eggs at once. But when he cut the hen open, he found her to be just like any other hen, without any golden eggs inside. By letting his greed get the best of him, the farmer lost his hen and the steady wealth it provided.

The moral of the story is often summarized as "Greed can lead to ruin," teaching that patience and gratitude for what one has is better than succumbing to greed, which can result in losing everything.
