Two women were rescued from the rubble on Wednesday in the southern Turkish city of Kahramanmaras, and nine days later, a mother and two children were rescued in Antakya. The state-owned Anadolu news agency reported that the rescue in Antakya occurred 228 hours after the earthquake.
Authorities assert that millions of survivors require humanitarian assistance, with many of them left homeless in temperatures that are close to freezing. There are currently very few rescues. As a result of the earthquakes, a significant portion of the region's sanitation infrastructure was destroyed or rendered inoperable, making it difficult for health authorities to ensure that no one is ill.
The president of the International Committee of the Red Cross, Mirjana Spoljaric Egger, stated that individuals in war-ravaged Syria face additional new obstacles. She made the following statement in response to her recent visit to Syria: "For more than a decade, people across Syria have experienced the devastation of armed conflict." It didn't matter which side of the frontline a community was on when the region was hit by the earthquake on February 6—they all suffered significant devastation. People were displaced once more, homes were destroyed, and friends and family were killed. The availability of dependable food sources, safe drinking water, and medical care became immediate necessities for survival. The 7.8-magnitude earthquake on February 6 near the southeast city of Kahramanmaras killed 35,418 people, according to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's statement on Tuesday. This makes it the deadliest earthquake in Turkish history.
Erdogan referred to the quake as "the disaster of the century" because it destroyed tens of thousands of buildings and rendered an equal number uninhabitable. As a result, a large number of residents were left without a place to hide from the bitter winter weather. Several building contractors have been detained by authorities and charged with breaking Turkey's building codes. Since aid began arriving on February 9, 117 trucks, according to the United Nations, have entered the opposition-controlled northwest. U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres made a $397 million appeal on Tuesday to help Syria recover from the earthquake. He also said that a similar appeal is being made for Turkey. Margaret Besheer, VOA United Nations Correspondent, and the VOA Turkish Service both contributed to this report, which also includes information from Reuters and The Associated Press.
