Black cherries are one of the most commonly used fruits in desserts and drinks. They have a slight bitterness. Despite this, they are a favorite among many birds and mammals.

In fact, black cherries are a very important source of food for a wide variety of animals. Ruffed grouse, greater prairie chicken, and wild turkey are just a few of the species that feed on the fruit.

The fruits are rich in polyphenol antioxidants, which may reduce inflammation and the risk of developing arthritis. Some studies also suggest that they may help reduce symptoms of gout.

Cherries come in different varieties, including sweet and sour. If you are shopping for cherries, you should ask about the specific variety. For example, orange Sunsugar cherries are some of the tastiest on the market. Cherry trees grow best in cool and moist soils. This is especially true in the Midwest.

While some cherries are cultivated commercially, other types are wild. Wild black cherry trees are known for their tasty fruits. Known as pemmican in the past, these fruits were high in calories and were used as a food source for native Americans.

Besides their use in ice cream and pie filling, black cherries are a common ingredient in cough medicine. You can also make wine and brandy from the fruit.

There are more than 40 species of birds that feed on black cherries. Woodpeckers and mockingbirds are among those that eat them. Other birds include wood thrushes and great crested flycatchers.
