Moving between apartments here is rarely a smooth process. You almost never get your new keys on the exact day your old lease ends, and dealing with Ejari setups usually leaves you with a gap of a few days where you are essentially homeless.
When I moved from Marina to JVC last month, I had to figure out what to do with a full apartment of furniture for five days. You basically have two choices. The first is begging friends with villas to let you use their garage. It sounds great because it is free. The problem is the humidity and the dust. I left a mattress in a friend's garage a few years ago and it was completely ruined by mold within a week.
The second option is paying for proper climate-controlled space. I ended up looking for storage units Dubai and rented a small locker in Al Quoz for a month. It cost me a bit upfront, but it gave me total peace of mind while I waited for my new landlord to sort out the paperwork.
A lot of people are dealing with this right now. I read this Khaleej Times report recently about how skyrocketing rents are forcing tenants to shift to new neighborhoods, which means moving companies are incredibly busy right now.
My verdict is to skip the favors and just pay for the professional storage facility. It is much cheaper than replacing a warped dining table or a musty sofa.
If you are doing this soon, keep these things in mind: * Book your movers and storage space at least three weeks early. * Check if the facility has 24-hour access so you are not stuck waiting on moving day. * Wrap anything fabric in heavy plastic before it goes into the truck.
Good luck with the packing. It is a massive headache, but you will get through it.
